Cllrs call on mayor to address pending issues
19 Sep 2018
Some councillors in Gaborone have expressed concern that issues they raised in the previous sittings have not been addressed.
Commenting on the mayor’s speech, specially elected councillor, Mr MacDonald Peloetletse, said the council should be seen to be treating issues with utmost urgency they deserve. He said councillors were in-charge of the city and as such they deserved an update about issues affecting their electorates.
He said their role as councillors on housing should have been reflected in the speech as well as updates on road infrastructure, planning in Gaborone and environmental protection that included collection of waste.
Cllr Peloetletse said Gaborone experienced more accidents than other towns and cities particularly on weekends when people return from entertainment spots.
He said the speech did not address issues on how prepared was the fire department, adding that even the medical department should have been deliberated on as more lives were lost during fire and car accidents due to shortage of ambulances.
He also talked about the safety on the streets, citing that criminals snatched hand bags from women in traffic lights. He said the speech should have highlighted how safe the community was when walking or driving around the city.
For his part, Councillor Motlogelwa Moatlhodi commended the council for installing street lights on roads in the ward.
On one hand, he said some projects that were conducted in 2017/18financial year that were still lagging behind.
Cllr Moatlhodi said the issue of election registration seemed to have come as an emergency to the Independent Electoral Commissions Office since most of the polling stations were tents and there was no provision of toilets for use by the polling officers and the community.
He said nearby homes were burdened by the requests to use toilets.
He said when the commission tried to tender for provision of toilets, it proved to be too costly for the government.
Cllr for Marang/Tsholofelo East Meshack Kebeileng said their purpose as councillors was to develop Gaborone as a whole irrespective of party affiliation. ENDS
