Mandate achievable

18 Sep 2018

The Ministry of Basic Education’s mandate of producing 21st century students is achievable through the commitment of parents, teachers, learners and other stakeholders.

Serowe Sub-region chief education officer, Ms Bernadette Monagen said in order for schools to succeed, there was need to bring everyone on board.

Officially opening the Month of the Ministry of Basic Education in Serowe recently, said this would enable stakeholders to tackle issues affecting students as a single unit.

Ms Monagen said through the event, the ministry hoped to reach out to the community by engaging with them on what the sub-region had to offer.

She called on stakeholders to assist in providing assistance in developing schools, adding that shortage of classrooms remained a challenge.

Ms Monagen the theme; Every Teacher Must Learn, challenged schools to be at the center of initiating developments and to take advantage of existing strategies to improve.

The strategies, she said, included programmes such as breakthrough to Setswana, project teaching, teacher capacity building, information communication technology, wellness in the workforce and early childhood development.

Ms Monagen said the home remedial teaching programme was one of the strategies that had proved worthwhile as it produced high academic results for those who utilised it.

She said there was need for more schools to take advantage of such collaborative strategies since they helped raise performance in schools through working with parents.

“Other enabling programmes include drama and storytelling as teaching tools,” she said.

The event, usually celebrated in August, was moved to September due to lack of funds. ENDS
