Maun councillors plead for regular updates from land board

18 Sep 2018

Councillors in the Maun Administrative Authority have requested Tawana Land Board to regularly update them on issues affecting the board.

They told the board during a sub-council meeting that sharing of such information would help them come up with solutions to land challenges.

Councillors said updates would keep them abreast on all issues affecting the board and enable them to confidently address their respective communities on such issues.

They argued that the information would also encourage the spirit of collaboration among stakeholders.

Councillors said council could help the board to mitigate on issues of waiting lists which they said was one of the big challenges they are facing.

For his part, specially elected councillor, Mr Lathang Molonda, commended the board, saying informing the councilors would give them courage to help and work cooperatively with them to serve the community.

Mr Molonda said the council was one of the vital board stakeholders, saying they should always be updated about the annual plans so that they could assist where possible.

“It is important to break down the information especially on the waiting list to show the number of people in the list, and whether they have plots already or not” he said.

Another pecially elected councilor, Mr Abel Molelo also highlighted the need for the updates saying that would help the council to speed up its duties of designing layout plans.

Cllr Molelo said when the council was well informed on what was happening within the land board, it would be easy for them to engage themselves hence helping the land board to mitigate their main issue of long waiting lists that were common in most of the land boards.

“You should engage the council on every step you are taking, council would also help to come with ideas of using open spaces and fields in the planned areas and allocate it to people as a way of reducing the waiting list,” he said.

However Sehithwa sub landboard secretary, Mr Diikaego Maswabi assured the councilors that the board would engage the council on their day to day work.

Mr Maswabi, however, urged stakeholders to collaborate with them as that would help them to successfully address some issues that were affecting them.

He said the land in Ngamiland district was economically important saying that was the main reason people were applying for plots in the area in large numbers.

Mr Maswabi emphasised that they were faced with the challenges of long waiting list that needed them to speed up their allocation processes. With the help of stakeholders, he said they would manage. ENDS
