Parental involvement in learning process vital

18 Sep 2018

Motivational speaker, Dr Figar Pheto says parents with positive attitude towards education can inspire their children and show them how to take charge of their own educational path.

Giving a keynote address at Mabogo Junior Secondary School prize giving ceremony recently, Dr Pheto said there was need for cordial bond between children and parents noting that parents should connect with teachers, encourage children to learn, monitor children's learning process and provide supportive environment for learning in the house.

She said parents played a vital role in their children’s education irrespective of the age of the child, adding that proper guidance by parents towards their children could help them to recognise the time to learn new things in and out of school.

Dr Pheto said parental involvement in the learning process was paramount, therefore she urged parents to put more effort and take responsibility of moulding their children.

Dr Pheto said learners should know that education was a powerful tool that could alleviate poverty as well as improving the economy of the country.

She said education prepared students for the market place of ideas and information, and allows them to be meaningful residents and contributors in the knowledge economy.

Dr Pheto, a dentist by profession and an entrepreneur, urged students to cast their net wide as they progress in their studies.

“I stand here as a testimony to the fact that if you make a decision to do things right and pursue knowledge and expertise, it pays at the end,” she said.

She congratulated students who were awarded with gifts arguing that rewarding the students for their hard work had been the most important aspect of creating a spirit of competition among learners.

“I wish to warn prize winners not to be complacent, not to relax and not to think that they have conquered the world.

Those who have not received anything should be inspired to work hard so that they too can be celebrated in future” she said.

For his part, the school head, Mr Polite Mabalani said the school strived for excellence both in academics and extra-curricular activities by providing their clients with the best education they could possibly offer as well as moulding students into responsible future leaders.

Nonetheless, Mr Mabalani said the school’s academic performance had seriously declined in the past five years.

He said in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017/18 the school attained 17.3, 32.6, 17.6, 13.9, 9.1 per cent pass marks respectively. ENDS
