Lions Club assists visually impaired students

Publicity secretary of Nyangabwe Lions Club, Mr Dillip Nunes says they are working tirelessly to assist some of the visually challenged students at Tashata Junior Secondary School at Tati Siding.
Mr Nunes told BOPA in an interview that 38 Tashata JSS pupils underwent an elementary eye screening process, adding that they will be taken to some private optical centres for assistance.
He indicated that some of the students would be provided with prescribed spectacles free of charge, revealing that those whose challenges cannot be remedied through spectacles will be referred to Nyangabwe Hospital for the prescribed treatment.
“Students with sight problems that only need treatment will be monitored so that possible assistance be given out should the need arise,” he said.
Mr Nunes further noted that visual impairment was one serious condition that could negatively affect the academic performance and social lives of children, therefore he said any assistance that can lessen the challenges should be implemented accordingly by those with the relevant expertise.
Meanwhile, he revealed that the decision to identify and assist pupils who were visually challenged was part of their quest to freely supply 100 pupils with prescribed spectacles, a target that was set last year when Lions Club International celebrated its centenary.
He said to date, 450 students from Francistown and surrounding areas have already undergone several eye tests, with 62 having received prescribed spectacles, while others were only eligible for treatment. ENDS
