04 Sep 2018
Security Association of Botswana has been commended for voicing concern over the killings of women.
Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration MrNonofo Molefhi said the current social problem called for the involvement of all and fell into the broader government agenda of ensuring peace and harmony.
The association recently staged a march from Gaborone Senior Secondary School grounds to Tlokweng main kgotla in condemnation of the increasing reports of killings and abuse of women and the girl child.
Mr Molefhi stated most of the security companies’ employees were male and among those who arrived first at crime scenes.
Private securities, government, non-governmental organisations, churches and other stakeholders had a role to play.
He highlighted that, in some cases, issues of abuse were not easily detectable at an early stage as they happen to related people who should be caring for one other.
Tlokweng village has of recent months been on spotlight after a woman was beheaded and dumped in that village.
For his part, the association’s chairperson Mr Gaolatwe Modongo said expressed worry about the cases of killings and abuse of women and girl children.
Mr Modungo stated that their walk was mainly to start a national dialogue on what had gone wrong and come up with remedial measures to help the nation.
Furthermore, he stated that they had realised that there was need for national prayers on the matter, adding that it was regrettable that almost all the brutal murdering of women which happened in Tlokweng were not done by descendants of the village.
Earlier, Batlokwa deputy chief, Kgosi Michael Gaborone said the village had been turned into a dumping site of litter and human bodies.
He regretted that murder cases and dumping of human bodies do not involve the descendants of Tlokweng.
Kgosi Gaborone said the incidents had tarnished the good name of the village and informed men that ‘they do not have any rights over their female counterparts.’
The walk was held under the theme, +1 000 men against the brutal killing of women. Ends
