30 Aug 2018

Tloaneng Primary School head has applauded parents for their continued support towards their children’s education as the school continues to excel in PSLE results.

Speaking in an interview, Ms Gagoitsiwe Marata said some parents and members of the Parents Teachers Association had played a major role in the academic excellence of the school as they cooperated and shared ideas with the school management.

The school has managed to maintain an average of above 60 per cent mark for ABC since its first PSLE results in 2002.

Ms Marata said in 2017 the school was able to produce 91.3 per cent pass mark for ABC in PSLE, and was registered as one of the top 50 most performing schools in PSLE as it got position 31 out of 752 primary schools in the country.

She said parents were supportive of their children as they helped them with home work and ensured they went to school in a neat school uniform, saying it has contributed to the pupil’s learning capability.

“Whenever there is a PTA meeting in the school, parents come in large numbers and also take part in discussions, share ideas and give advice were applicable.

This on its own has shown that those parents know the importance of education and which role to play in making sure that their children have a successful future,” she said.

She said about 80 per cent of parents always contributed money towards the prize giving ceremony which motivated children to continue doing well in their studies.

She said they have also introduced monthly tests and that  there was a lot of competition as learners wanted to prove themselves in order to win a badge for top 10 in all the streams.

Furthermore, she said they have pupil of the month award as a way of inspiring and appreciating those pupils who did exceptionally well in their monthly tests.

Still in the end of month appreciations, Ms Marata said they have best teacher of the month and employee of the month.

Ms Marata said parents and other members of the community had also volunteered to help children with their home work during Saturday study which was meant for revisions and catching up on the syllabus.

Giving an overview of the achievement of the school, Ms Marata said the school had a good record of scooping trophies for best performance in the sub region. She noted that they had so far retained four of such trophies as they always outclass other schools.  She however said not only does her school perform well in PSLE, but that teachers across all standards competed well in the sub region and regionally.

“Both teachers and learners are really working hard to meet the target of 40 per cent AB pass rate as well as 80 per cent ABC pass set for primary schools in Kweneng,” she said. She added that even in extracurricular activities they performed well, as some athletes went as far as the national level in 2016.

One of the parents, Ms Mafela Motlogelwa said as parents they had taken responsibility to strive for the best for their children as they contributed in different ways towards their learning.

Ms Motlogelwa said team work and cooperation with the school management made their children to pass as they received support from both sides.

She said they did not leave the burden to teachers as they always made sure they helped their children with school work and financial contributions towards school development projects.

She said through the leadership of the PTA, they ploughed for the learners and sold farm produce as a way of complimenting the school budget.

She said part of the produce was also given to leaners to brace their meals from the usual everyday meal. ENDS
