Churches regroup as mine closure shrinks collection cup

28 Aug 2018

Selebi Phikwe Kgaolo One - United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) held a fundraising dinner at Travellers Guest House in Selebi Phikwe on August 25.

The dinner which was held under theme “Christ our living hope (1 Peter 1:3)’ brought together members of different denominations from around Selebi Phikwe.

Guest Speaker at the church dinner, Selebi Phikwe Police Station Commander Superintendent Victor Nlebesi said the fund raising dinner would help the church to meet its financial obligations and be able to reach its goal of addressing social ills facing society.

Supt Nlebesi urged congregants to be confident and take pride in what they did, particularly that the church would remain the pillar for transforming the behaviour of society and moulding good attitudes.

The church deacon, Ms Lilian Motlhaping said the objective of the dinner was to bring churches together to share ideas on how to tackle social ills experienced in society and also on how churches could raise funds and empower themselves to better serve the communities they operated in.

Ms Motlhaping said churches in Selebi Phikwe faced setbacks because of the dwindling numbers of church members after a great number left the town in search of greener pastures due to the closure of BCL Mine.

She said this had a negative impact on churches and limited contribution of resources to the church.

Selebi Phikwe churches need to support each other and share ideas on how to best raise funds for their  operations.

Ms Keolebale Masilo thanked congregants from different Selebi Phikwe churches who attended the dinner, adding that their support reflected their commitment to serving God.

Ms Masilo urged them to continue supporting each other in fund raising events. ENDS
