21 Aug 2018
Elections registration supervisors in the North West District have been encouraged to uphold integrity and ensure credibility in the registration and voting processes for the 2019 general elections.
Speaking at orientation of election supervisors organised by the Independence Electoral Commission (IEC) in Maun on August 20, Batawana’s Kgosi Charles Letsholathebe said elections were a sensitive issue requiring patience and botho.
He encouraged the officers to appreciate voters noting that they came from different backgrounds, cultures and age groups.
The district’s Assistant Commissioner Mr Ramogaupi Gaborekwe advised the election registration supervisors to ensure integrity throughout the election process until the announcement of the results.
Mr Ramogaupi observed that supervisors had a challenging task as the intermediary in the
election process.
Chief Elections Officer Mr Jacob Motlhanka advised the election registration supervisors to ensure fairness in the registration process.
“You should be free from political and other manipulation or intimidation,” he said.
Mr Motlhanka further advised the supervisors to avoid being politically biased when executing their job and also to be vigilant.
He stated that voter registration was a constitutional right for the people and also provided data that helped in planning for the general elections.
In addition, Mr Motlhanka said voter registration helped to filter eligible voters.
The chief elections officer emphasised the importance of accurate recording for data validity. ENDS
