The 28-year-old Kebitsaone Makubate from Bobonong says commitment, hard work and determination are key tenets to succeed in business.
In an interview, Ms Makubate, who operates Kebzy Fashions in Molepolole, said her journey of dressmaking and textiles started after completing a three year Trade B in dressmaking and textile course at Moshupa Brigade.
She pointed out that as unemployment is still a concern in the country, she thought of beating the odds by starting her own business to eke a living instead of joined the long queue of unemployed youth.
She further said unlike most of her peers who are funded by Youth Development Fund (YDF), she opted to use her personal savings to kick-start her business.
She however said she intends to seek funds from the Companies and Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA) to extend the business and create employment opportunities for other youth, explaining that currently she has employed only one.
The young lady pointed out that she grew up with a passion for fashion, hence it was logical for her to pursue it to make a living.
Ms Makubate said even though there are many dress makers in her area, the competition does not deter her as she receives positive feedback as well as support from her clients and the community at large, despite her business being only a few months old.
She said her business caters for men, women and children, adding that unlike most dressmakers who use different fabrics, she tries to be unique by mostly using African fabrics.
As every business has own challenges, Ms Makubate says hers is no exception, revealing that she deals with different clients some of whom are difficult to handle with some liking last minute work, forcing her to work under pressure.
She also said the business is seasonal, adding that there is a boom during the ‘wedding season’ and the beginning of school terms.
She however said, Kgosi Sechele 1 Museum helps them a lot as every month, it invites them to a market day to showcase their products at Mafenyatlala Mall in Molepolole.
She said the market days help them to meet potential clients and benchmark from other handicrafts artists, which she says works well for her as she is new in the industry and thus has a lot to learn.
She said her dream is to see her business grow into a label, with more youth employees and supplying government and other organisations. ENDS
