Craft career paths at young age - Baitshoki
20 Aug 2018
Kanye-based business advisor with the Local Enterprise Authority (LEA), Mr Katlo Baitshoki has applauded Mathiba Junior School in Kanye for efforts to improve performance and enable learners to craft career paths at a young age.
Speaking during a career fair last week, Mr Baitshoki said career fairs helped learners prepare for the future they wanted early, and start working towards that end while they still could, rather than wading through life until they reached a point where the results determined which career path to follow.
He explained that catching learners young would enable learners to know what subject combinations they needed to take with a view to work towards a particular career path.
He said many people unfortunately, ended up doing careers they never wanted for lack of information as to what was available for them out there.
Mr Baitshoki encouraged learners to develop a business mind while still young so they had an option to venture into business should they not go far with schooling.
He said doing so could help them create employment for themselves and other young people.
A private dentist, Dr Thato Motswasele however emphasised that discipline was a critical ingredient for learners.
He said intelligence helped but would not take a learner far without discipline and focus.
Dr Motswasele shared that through the years, he saw bright, young learners who were, without doubt, destined to go far in life, selling themselves short as a result of lack of discipline.
“These career fairs give these learners exposure and awareness, which we never had in our time,. Had I known of these events growing up, I could perhaps have taken a different path, ”he said.
For his part, the school head, Mr Monty Keipeile explained that they invited various local stakeholders like Sejelo police, Ravos training institution, LEA and others with a view to give learners a glimpse of what was available for them outside school.
He said the aim was to improve performance.
Mr Keipeile also thanked area Member of Parliament, Mr Patrick Ralotsia for donating cows to high fliers across schools in his area, which he said did not only inculcate the spirit of farming in the growing minds of the learners, but also accelerated performance.
He said they invited Sejelo police with the aim to challenge learners to steer clear of delinquent activities like drugs usage that could ruin their future.
Sejelo police Sub-inspector Gakologelwang Mosepele warned learners that students could incur a criminal background through common delinquent behaviours like vandalising school property, fighting, doing drugs and group rape, which would later stalk them through life.
She said having a criminal record could jeopardise their chances of getting employed when they finished school. ENDS
