Sustainable initiatives vital

Government recognises the importance of ensuring sustainable growth of the rural economy and the role it plays in developing the livelihoods of those in rural areas, says Vice President, Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe.
Officiating at the ground breaking of Macheng Mall in Hukuntsi on July 29, Dr Kedikilwe said the P25 million project, a brain child of AT & T Monnakgotla, is a significant step to bolster government’s commitment to rural development.
He noted that the establishment of Macheng Mall is at the heart of the economic diversification initiative which has been, and remains, at the centre of government’s development agenda.
Dr Kedikilwe further noted that the shopping centre comes at a time when government is implementing the Economic Diversification Drive (EDD) initiative.
He thus applauded efforts made by local business moghuls to partake in the diversification drive and called on other stakeholders to consider venturing into income generating initiatives to drive the country’s economic growth.
“Government is appreciative of the relentless efforts by local entrepreneurs to develop the economy through economic diversification and employment creation particularly in remote areas of the country,” he said.
In essence, he said the Macheng project is bound to contribute, in no small measures, to government’s continued efforts to develop, nurture and sustain such critical sectors as tourism and hospitality, retail, banking and energy.
Dr Kedikilwe further stated that Kgalagadi has been widely acknowledged as a destination of choice for farmers with the urge for livestock rearing and added that he is hopeful that the opening of such a commercial centre will provide a lucrative market for farmers.
He also indicated that the new facilities will undoubtedly change the landscape of Hukuntsi in addition to creating business and employment opportunities in the area.
The Vice President emphasised that with excellent infrastructure and global connectivity, Hukuntsi can be a preferred location for global business activities going forward.
The Macheng Mall project comprises a 16-chalet lodge, conference facilities, restaurant, supermarkets and commercial bank, amongst others. It is expected yo create over 200 jobs upon its completion, which will be in 12 months’ time. ENDS
