Duo adopts practical subjects labs

13 Aug 2018

The director and Founder of 45 Minutes With Emmanuel Kayenda, Mr Emmanuel Kayenda together with the executive chef of Chobe Marina Lodge, Panga Mosiya have adopted laboratories at Chobe Junior Secondary School.

The duo, who visited the school on August 10, adopted the Art and Home Economics labs.

The adoption process was infused with motivational talks and donation of stationery to the Art department.

Mr Kayenda encouraged the students to put as much effort in their optional subjects as they did in their core subjects, saying he was living testimony of how one could earn a living from the arts.

He said the motive behind his choice to focus chiefly on Art and Home Economics was because he was determined to help inspire and build the fashion industry in Botswana and he believed these two subjects were central to the industry.

Moving forward, Kayenda said he would be working with the school to hold mini fashion shows where designers and models would be students themselves, in an attempt to hone their talents and skills.

“When you have a skill, you can sustain yourself,” he said.

He shared the principles that he held dear and enabled him to be successful today, terming them as the five P’s namely, Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.

He encouraged the students to draw personal timetables and manage their time well.

When welcoming the guests, the head of department at the school, Mr Olebogeng Monakwe said they were grateful for the visit and said the timing was perfect since the students were about to sit for their JC examinations, adding that the motivation would do them good.

Mr Monakwe said with the school having 975 students, they were experiencing challenges such as shortage of furniture, teaching space and stationary and would appreciate any help they could get from the private sector.

He said they were very grateful for the stationary and looking forward to working with model Kayenda and chef Mosiya.

Home Economics teacher, Ms Lesego Legwaila noted that the students were willing and eager to learn but they were unable to unleash their potential because of shortage of materials.

She said the students did very little practical work, which had proven to be a disadvantage as they performed poorly in their final examinations.

Chef Mosiya pledged to work hand in hand with the school to ensure that the students got as much practice as they needed , promising that he would henceforth be paying visits to the students to share knowledge with them. ENDS
