Academic performance collective responsibility

12 Aug 2018

Maunatlala Junior Secondary School  head, Ms Botho Makwati has pleaded with parents to work with the school to achieve good academic results.

She said this in an interview during a report collection at the school. She also expressed concern at the low turn-out of parents.

Ms Makwati said they had realised that in most cases guardians were the one who turned up to collect students’ reports, adding that it raised concern especially when students came with a guardian who had no input in the child’s upbringing and was not in a position to comment on the results nor the performance of the child.

She encouraged parents to come to the school even when it was not for report collection so as to get an overall view of the performance of their children.

The head teacher went on to explain that the set up for report collection was in such a way that parents and teachers got a one on one interaction so as to discuss the students’ results and map a way forward on how best they could be assisted to improve their results.

She said parents got to have a picture of the behaviour and academic performance of students hence she encouraged parents to take the exercise seriously and ensure that they availed themselves for such consultations.

The chairperson of Maunatlala prize giving committee, Mr Thabang Moleele appealed to the business community of Maunatlala to help with donations and sponsorship for their annual prize giving ceremony.

He said  although the committee tried by all means to raise funds for the event, they had realised that what they made was not enough and they ended up awarding students prizes that did not motivate academic excellenceENDS
