Kokorwe tells Lions Club to live motto

07 Aug 2018

Members of Lions Club of Gaborone have been implored to live their motto: We Serve.

Speaking at a dinner held to mark the change in leadership of the club recently, Speaker of the National Assembly Ms Gladys Kokorwe said it was only when they served with dedication and selflessness that Batswana would come to understand the club’s mandate.

She called on club members to work even harder in their service to the community.

The speaker thanked the club for  the charitable works it had so far carried out. She said despite the challenges of the past year, the club managed to achieve a lot in its efforts to help society.

Ms Kokorwe commended the club for its efforts to grow its membership noting that while 15 members left to form a new club, it was heartening that 26 others joined.

She said the formation of a new club was on its own a good development, as it would contribute to the efforts to help Botswana attain the status of an independent district. Presently Botswana is part of District 412A comprising Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Before being split into A and B, District 412 was made up of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique.

District governor for District 412A Mr David Saunyama said Botswana was indeed working towards becoming an independent district and urged new members to work hard towards helping the country to realise the noble dream.

For her part, outgoing Lions Club of Gaborone president Professor Kabita Bose expressed gratitude for the dedication of Botswana Lions Club members. She said it was because of such dedication and selfless service that local clubs had managed to achieve a lot over the past years.

After taking the pledge of service, incoming president Mr Ernest Mugo said the club would continue serving the nation to the best of its ability. He thus called upon the members to fully participate in the club’s activities to ensure they were completed successfully.

Mr Mugo appealed to past district governors to mentor the new leadership and help motivate members.

He encouraged all clubs to make it a tradition to review their activities with the view to coming up with ways of improving them. Regarding funding, which he said had been a challenge in the past year, he urged all members to help their clubs to identify ways of addressing them. Ends
