Former first lady, Ms Barbra Mogae and Member of Parliament for Gabane/Mmankgodi, Major General Puis Mokgware were among thousands who attended Ms Rosina Mannathoko’s funeral in Francistown on August 4.

Ms Mannathoko, former Gaborone mayor and mother to former Minister of Health, Ms Joy Phumaphi died on July 29 at Riverside Private Hospital after a long illness that saw her in and out of hospital.

President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s message of condolence to the Mannathoko family said “on behalf of the government of Botswana and the people of Botswana and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to convey to you and your family, our heartfelt condolences and sympathies.”

President Masisi said Ms Mannathoko, 88, would be remembered for her contribution to the socio-economic development of Botswana in various capacities including politics, education and women empowerment.

He said in recognition of her commitment and selfless service to the nation, Ms Mannathoko was awarded the Presidential Order of Honour in 2003 for serving the country with dignity and dedication.

“We pray that the family finds strength and comfort in the Almighty God as you go through these difficult times,” the message stated.

Speaking on behalf of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which Ms Mannathoko was a staunch and life member, Francistown mayor, Ms Silvia Muzila described Ms Mannathoko as a true democrat who believed in the interest of the party and the people.

Ms Muzila said the deceased was among the country’s important female politicians since independence for her active participation in the BDP.

She said Ms Mannathoko was instrumental in the formation of the BDP women’s wing, noting that her passing away was not only a loss to her family but the BDP as well.

Ms Mannathoko’s daughters, Ms Phumaphi and Ms Changu Mannathoko described their mother as loving, firm and strong. Ms Phumaphi said her mother fell ill after the death of her husband, Mr Richard Mannathoko in 2005 after which she was in and out of hospital and sometimes even sought medical assistance in South Africa.

Ms Mannathoko said her mother was a feminist who travelled the world to fight for women’s rights.

“She was an all-rounded woman who took part in sports, politics, family life, the country and everything else,” she added.

Ms Mannathoko was born in 1930 in Gabane and was the first born child of Mr Mogae Mmipi and Ms Mmangaka Mmipi.

She served as a diplomat before joining politics in 1969. She also served as Gaborone mayor for five years. ENDS
