Permanent Secretary to the President (PSP), Mr Carter Morupisi says public servants must be facilitative and helpful when giving services to the public.
He said this last Thursday when addressing public officers at Kagiso Senior Secondary School in Ramotswa.
He said the attitude of public officers should change to being facilitative and helpful in order to assist government in its endeavour to develop the country.
Mr Morupisi said government, through the leadership of President Mokgweetsi Masisi, has placed job creation among its top priorities hence the need to have a conducive environment for the private sector to grow and create jobs for the economy.
He said public service employees as an extension of government services to the public, should be proactive in offering the support needed by the private sector.
He also cautioned that public service employees should not be seen to be proactive in applying punitive measures against emerging local businesses, but should aid them to offer better services and grow.
Furthermore, he said government wanted authorities to decentralise services to districts and outstations as it would create job opportunities for the districts.
On other issues, he said President Masisi had a keen interest in nurturing the family structure, and that children should be afforded a conducive environment to grow.
He also said children should start at an early age to learn that the world was competitive and that they ought to compete.
In addition, Mr Morupisi said parents should not hinder children from growing their talents, but should teach them to be good at what they did.
“Be the best in what you are good at. In everything you do you must be a winner, you must excel, you must be competitive,” he said.
He also said human capital development remained key to every nation which seeks to advance its economic development.
He added that there was need to develop formal education, talent and non-formal education as they were core to development.
Mr Morupisi also said President Masisi had directed that laws, policies and regulations which impeded and frustrated doing business and serving the public should be relooked into.
He also advised public officers to offer their services with a smile and close all the gaps which led to corruption.
Meanwhile from Good Hope, reporter Bakang Segokgo reports that when addressing Good Hope Senior Secondary School staff meeting recently, Mr Morupisi urged public officers to come up with strategies to help improve the results of students in the Good Hope subdistrict.
Mr Morupisi said students’ poor performance in the sub-district, especially at Good Hope Senior Secondary School, was worrisome.
He advised them to plan meetings looking at the situation on the ground, adding that he was not impressed by how students performed in the area.
Mr Morupisi said President Masisi’s road map focused on ensuring that they excelled in what they did, including ensuring that good academic results in the sub-district were maintained.
He said by improving the situation it would make students succeed and perhaps work outside the country thus making Botswana proud.
He said it was the responsibility of all public officers to make contributions towards improving students’ results.
He said by so doing it would help them to be proud as a sub-district.
Mr Morupisi noted that for them to be in line with the President’s mandate, they should do away with whatever was delaying government services.
He also encouraged public officers to study in order to be competitive.
“President Masisi wants Botswana to be an international conference destination, therefore it is up to the public officers that they work hard to help make this a reality,” he added.
Furthermore, he noted that President Masisi has created a national transformation team that would boost the national strategy.
He gave an example of uncertified copies of omang, saying people were not assisted because they did not certify them.
For their part, public officers complained about progression, work overload, delays of overtime payment and transport challenges.
Mr Morupisi advised senior public officers in the district to be accountable and monitor overtime.
Senior accountant council secretary, Mr Robert Rabasimane also encouraged public officers to work hard so that they could improve education results in the district. Ends
