Ngwana teaches coding

29 Jul 2018

Ngwana Enterprise Ltd, a locally owned business has committed itself to teaching learners, teachers and the youth the art of coding to help them acquire skills needed for the 21st century.

Giving a brief introduction of the programme at a training of trainers’ session for Africa code week at Satellite Primary School in Francistown, the founder of Ngwana Enterprise Mr Mooketsi Tekere noted that ‘coding is a computer language that teaches young people digital literacy skills.’

Mr Tekere further stated that through the initiative, children in Gaborone had created games of their own through coding, adding that to be able to achieve that, one needed to have a positive mindset and computational thinking.

“Coding does not require any special skill, anyone can do it, it requires a commitment of time,” he added.

He further challenged teachers and parents not to only depend on the government to support local projects adding that they should be in the forefront supporting and encouraging students to be creative through coding.

For his part, the deputy mayor of Francistown also area councilor for Satellite South, Mr Godisang Radisigo observed that every organisation, government and non-governmental use coding and technology on a day to day basis.

He added that ‘young people are inquisitive by nature’ and it was important to ensure that they are not left behind where technology is concerned.

Mr Godisang further advised Mr Tekere to engage the business community and other stakeholders in initiatives like this one, adding that a lot could be achieved through coding if the initiative is supported adequately. ENDS
