Poor state of dirt roads worry councillors
26 Jul 2018
Letlhakeng Sub-district councillors have raised concerns about the poor state of dirt road networks in their area.
Commenting after the opening speech by the sub-district chairperson on July 24, Ngware councillor, Mr Ontatlhile Selatlho argued that the road that connected Letlhakeng and Diphuduhudu and also passed through Malwelwe and Ngware was in a bad state.
He said over the years, the road had been overly maintained through gravelling and grading, which had now worn it to such a state and had now turned into a channel to the extent that during rainy seasons, water ran into it and made it impassable.
He also said that the Department of Roads was also faced with a challenge of making slits for water to run off as the road was surrounded by farming fields, meaning that water would run into those fields.
Cllr Selatlho also maintained that constant gravelling of the road had been costly and thus a permanent solution would be to tar it.
Other roads that were cited as posing a challenge, particularly during the rainy season, included the Letlhakeng-Kaudwane road.
Cllr for Mantshwabisi, Mr Meshack Tshenyego on the other hand complained about the high rising incidences of murder in the area, particularly that they mostly occurred at bars during odd hours when such outlets should be closed.
He therefore pleaded with the law enforcement authorities such as the police to ensure that bars adhered to stipulated operating times.
Cllr Tshenyego also expressed concern about a seemingly developing trend where thieves steal government vehicles, saying thiat would exacerbate the already challenging situation of lack of vehicles for departments to implement government policies.
For his part, Cllr for Salajwe, Mr Lopang Sebutlenyane called on the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development to consider increasing the annual fund for Youth Development Fund per constituency.
He argued that the current amount of P2 million per constituency was meager, considering available evidence that the initiative was on demand.
Cllr Sebutlenyane also pleaded with the sub-council chairperson to tour the area and use his status to explain to constituents reasons for failure of some developments that were promised to be implemented following the 2014 general elections.
He also raised concern at the escalating number of needy persons in the sub-district, saying such may be an indication that implementation of initiatives was not being done well.
Cllr for Letlhakeng North, Ms Stella Segwagwa blamed poor implementation on the collapsed committees that were meant to push such projects. She said such committees no longer existed on both the political and administrative wings of government. ENDS
