Non-collection of clinical waste worrisome

24 Jul 2018

Molepolole/Lentsweletau Sub-district is said to be seriously challenged by the high volume of uncollected clinical waste generated by health facilities in the sub-district.

Speaking during the official opening of the sub-council on July 23, deputy council chairperson, Mr Slumber Mokgosi said the council was concerned about the indiscriminate disposal of clinical waste, particularly nappies, which he said were likely to compromise public health.

The situation, he said, was worsened by the disposing of such at facilities that did not have proper clinical waste cages to temporarily store waste pending collection.

“Efforts are ongoing to try cub the pollution of the environment as it has been observed that there are activities taking place in illegal dumping sites on our outskirts bushes,” Mr Mokgosi observed.

He also reported that the sub-district was experiencing a high number of human/wildlife conflict cases, in areas of Lentsweletau, Medie, Kweneng up to Sojwe, mostly caused by marauding elephants, which cause damage to crops, fences, water installations and public properties.

He said they were working to address the situation, but their efforts were hindered by frequent breakdowns of vehicles due to bad terrain.

He decried late disbursement of compensation to 333 farmers currently owed close to half a million Pula, adding that over P105 000 had since been paid but was not sufficient to complete the backlog.

On issues of development, the vice council chairman expressed happiness over completion of 2017/2018 major building maintenance projects.

He said they were currently working towards completing 11 houses under the Department of Tribal Administration, where only one house was reportedly pending due to financial constraints.

Mr Mokgosi further updated the house on the successful enrolment of Smart Switch to villages with electricity to areas of Gakuto, Gamodubu, Sojwe and Shadishadi and promised to work towards enrolling four identified areas.

The meeting was briefed about the impending Family Fun Day organised by the Molepolole/Lentsweletau Sub-district in collaboration with Childline Botswana slated for August 3 at the Molepolole Main Kgotla.

The event, it was further said, will focus mainly on case work results, which shows a high number of dysfunctional families, breeding a high number of neglected children, child sexual abuse, co-parenting issues and defilement. ENDS
