Proof ownership necessary for livestock removal

18 Jul 2018

Francistown Central Police have expressed concern about farmers or individuals who continue delivering meat to events or butcheries without proof of identification of the livestock.

In an interview with BOPA recently, Superintendent Lebalang Maniki said they were investigating a case in which three men, ranging between 20 and 30 years, were arrested for failure to produce proof of identification of the livestock when they were delivering meat to a church event over the holidays.

Supt Maniki urged Batswana to desist from the tendency of transporting meat to butcheries and events without legal documentation.

He explained that according to the Stock Theft Act, no person shall cause or permit any stock or produce of which, he is the owner to be driven, conveyed or transported by any other person without furnishing that person with a removal certificate.

Supt Maniki explained that failure to produce proof of identification of the livestock or removal certificate can lead to a fine of P2 000 or imprisonment for a year or both.

He further said that they were investigating a case in which a butchery owner had slaughtered a cow outside the licensed premises, noting that, that was illegal as it could endanger consumers’ health. ENDS
