CAAB aims to be on top - CEO

Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) is aiming to be a global competitor, be amongst the best aviation regulator by providing safe, secure and sustainable aviation services in line with international standards and norms.

The chief executive officer, Mr Geoffrey Moshabesha said this when giving overview of the authority’s 2015-2020 strategic plan which sets out a bold and ambitious vision for aviation and service provision in the country.

He informed stakeholders that the authority is doing all it can to position itself as a global leader, become employer of choice and compete with other African countries.

“The intention is to transform the authority into an effective and innovative regulator that contributes to the development of a sustainable ad environmentally friendly aviation industry by investing in its human capital and increasing our revenue to P225 000 000 by 2020,” he added.

Mr Moshabesha said human resources development is critical and efforts are made to develop it, so that they (employees) can contribute towards the achievement of the strategy. He said the other aim is to improve authority’s financial muscle with a view to reduce dependency on government assistance.

Furthermore, he said efforts were made on financial growth by optimizing the billing and revenue collection systems. He said in terms of operation, the organization was doing well, but will always strive to ensure compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards is met.

He said the authority is automising its services to improve customer service delivery. Stakeholders were also updated on the progress of the six priority areas that the authority was assigned to follow during last year’s meet.

Mr Moshabesha explained that on human capital development, government managed to approve 105 positions needed to close gaps identified during ICAO audit, and that annual training plan was in place.

He reported that authority was on the process to review its structure, development of attraction and retention strategy and on leveraging on technology, the authority is said to have completed the automated examination process, and is on advanced stage to develop its website.

On review of regulation and policies, Mr Moshabesha said the Aviation Act has been reviewed and is awaiting Cabinet approval. He said the authority had also drafted the civil aviation regulations and first draft has also been submitted to Attorney General Chambers. Ends
