18 Jul 2018

The fifth edition of the Kwambala Annual Cup and Family fun day held during the President’s Day holidays in Francistown brought together sporting codes and attracted sport lovers from Francistown and beyond.

Dubbed, Dablas July the event is the brainchild of Councillor Lesego Kwambala of Itekeng Ward in Area W in Francistown.

One of the event organisers, Moses Poloko said Kwambala Annual Cup was a crowd puller as it often brings life to the city of Francistown by boosting the local economy and providing a platform for the informal sector to sell goods and market their products.

“Dablas July is growing in leaps and bounds since its humble beginnings five years ago. The main aim of the event is to help local businesses in Itekeng Ward and Francistown to grow by giving small and medium entrepreneurs the opportunity to sell their products to a larger market,” he added.

Poloko further stated that the event also aimed at unearthing talent from the grassroot level and keep the youth busy so that they did not engage in criminal activities especially during the holidays.

He said the intention was to install streets lights and floodlights at the local football pitch so that some games could be played at night.

Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Kwambala explained that the cost of this year’s event was in the region of P120 000 from various sponsors and thanked them for making the event a success.

Kwambala also donated football kit and soccer balls to be used by an aspiring team of kids from Area W as well as medals and trophies to deserving teams and individuals.

Football, which was the event’s drawcard, saw six teams from Itekeng Ward grouped into three slugging it out for the grand prize of P2 700.

However, only two teams, Sector Select (made of soldiers) and Sorry Ma-Gents (made by Itekeng young boys) made it to the final after beating their rivals in stage groups.
