26 511 people await land allocation

10 Jul 2018

Parliament has learnt that there are 26 511 people waiting to be allocated land in Maun as at June 7, 2018. Assistant Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services, Mr Itumeleng Moipisi said the delay in moving the list was attributed to lack of funds to carry out a Strategic Environmental Assessment as required or necessitated by the law (E.I.A Act) of 2011.

Mr Moipisi further said there were various factors that could be attributed  to squatting such as conflicts within families forcing others to find alternative accommodation and delay in allocation of land Mr Moipisi was responding to a question in Parliament from Member of Parliament for Maun East, Mr Kostantinos Markus who had asked the minister  to state the number of people awaiting land allocation in Maun and state the causes of the delay in land allocation and the reasons for squatting despite the availability of land that could be allocated.
