Assistant Minister of Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Machana Shamukuni has praised the Good Samaritans for the passion the organisation has shown in improving local communities. 

Speaking at the launch of a football tournament sponsored by Kabo Morwaeng’s organisation, Good Samaritans, Shamukuni said although the organisation has been in existence for less than three years, it had already made an impact, having previously sponsored tournaments and provided stationery to schools.

He said he was happy that Batswana were assisting fellow citizens, saying previously, the country relied on foreign agencies. The assistant minister said government cannot meet all the needs of Batswana, hence he appealed to all, including the private sector to assist.

He appealed to the business community to assist organisations such as Good Samaritans saying they had limited funds as they were not profit making bodies.

The football tournament features eight social clubs and is to be played during the President’s Day Holidays.

The assistant minister said the tournament was a good initiative as the players who participate in these teams were mostly retired ones who do not have access to training facilities. He said the tournament would provide them with a platform to keep healthy and prevent non-communicable diseases.

He further said they keep them busy hence do not have time to engage in wayward behaviour.

Shamukuni further said the clubs should not be about football only but they should use them to uplift their social and economic standings by starting cooperative societies as well.  For his part, Councillor Slumber Mokogsi of Lekwapheng Ward in Molepolole said it was touching to see someone as Morwaeng who continues to assist people with the little he has although there were some rich people who do not give back to their communities.

He further called upon the club members not only to exercise on Sundays but to do so everyday. ENDS
