The youth have been urged to take part in sporting activities and promote social networking.
Officially opening the Sedibeng Catholic Church inaugural sport day in Molepolole recently, Reverend Father Deusdedit Kumbani said sport had been considered as a perfect upliftment of a human’s spiritual well-being.
Reverend Kumbani said in the history of humanity, sport had been regarded as a centre of people’s lives.
Therefore, he said the church gathered believers together in different sporting activities to interact and keep healthy.
He said once a person was physically well, they were in the right position and mindset to worship, adding that the church did not only need sick people to show its relevance in the community.
“While religion focuses on faith, love and hope, sport promotes one’s ability to use their stamina and strength on different activities. Therefore if one is able to exercise them all combined, they are likely to have an enriched spiritual well-being,” he said.
Reverend Kumbani noted that sporting activities brought the youth together and enabled them to know each other and promote team building as well as a sense of belonging.
“The youth nowadays are involved in alcohol and drug abuse, which is a main concern. Therefore it is the church’s responsibility to save them by engaging them in such sporting activities” he said.
Such activities, he said should be held at the church on a  regular basis to foster togetherness and cooperation among church members.
One of the participants, Oratile Mokoka said the event had given her an opportunity to interact with others and learn different life skills.
She noted that most of the games were not based on one’s physical strength to win, but rather challenged the participants to use common sense to proceed to the next level. Mokoka said the event motivated her to live a healthy lifestyle.
The event organiser, Kabo Sebele said they were happy with the turn out, adding that the event also promoted personal awareness and discipline among participants as well as team spirit.
Sebele said the event was beneficial to the church as it gave the youth a platform to tackle leadership roles, adding that the church encouraged the youth to fully participate in various leadership roles within the church.
He said the event was sponsored by the Pastoral Parish Council and contributions from the youth and other members of the church.
The day’s activities included athletics, aerobics, football, balloon and egg races and was held under the theme, “Encouraging healthy lifestyle through exercising”. ENDS
