Zoroga flood victims receive help

04 Jul 2018

Botswana Society for Human Development has donated food and clothing hampers to Zoroga flood victims recently.

Handing over the items, the society chairperson, Ms Sharon Tshipa said they go around villages to meet residents to come up with creative ways to tackle issues that thwart human and socio-economic development in Botswana.

“The major reason we have come together was to afford ourselves the opportune platform and support system that would allow us to be the change we wanted to see,” Ms Tshipa said.

She said government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of helping those in need hence their effort in working with relevant government stakeholders to achieve their projects.

Ms Tshipa said they conducted workshops on special education, mental health, disability projects and tourism books publishing among others.

She said through special education project, they managed to support students with hearing impairment and those with sight disabilities with proper learning strategies.

Ms Tshipa lamented that students living with disabilities had the ability to learn; adding that they only despair because of lack of special support at primary schools level, resulting in some dropping out of school.

Giving a vote of thanks, Kgosi Keolekile Malepa of Sekao ward in Zoroga applauded the society for supporting people living with disabilities.

He noted that after the Dineo cyclone, residents were left in hunger, thirst and without accommodation.

He however applauded different committees that embarked on pitching tents to provide instant shelter to the affected.

Kgosi Malepa said there was no access to neighbouring villages as Tsokatshaa road was submerged and he explained that they had a commercial plot for the community garden project, which had not yet commenced due to lack of finance.

He said the project would improve the livelihood of residents through food and employment creation, hence improving the village’s economy than having residents scrambling for 155 positions in Ipelegeng.

Kgosi Malepa applauded the society for organising workshops to help people overcome issues they come across on their daily lives, particularly those that were emotionally affected by the loss of their belongings. ENDS
