Tlokweng-Zeerust road worry police

Road traffic accidents along the Gaborone –Zeerust road in Tlokweng are said to be a concern to the police.
Over the past weekend, the Tlokweng police recorded two accidents along the road in which victims had to be ferried to hospitals where they are currently under care.
In an interview with BOPA on Tuesday, Tlokweng Police Station Traffic Officer, Assistant Superintendent Itumeleng Maruru said a 38-year-old man was admitted at Princess Marina Referral Hospital on Sunday after the car he was driving overturned.
He said the man who was travelling towards Gaborone was accompanied by a passenger who fortunately escaped without any injuries.
In another accident, a 32-year-old woman was knocked down by a car in Tlokweng while crossing the road on Monday.
The woman is currently under care at the Intensive Care Unit at Bokamoso Private Hospital.
Assistant Superintendent Maruru said the woman sustained serious injuries from the accidents and he regretted that the number of accidents occurring along the road was alarming.
He said there were many factors at play which contribute to the alarming road accidents along the road such as speeding and failure to give way for both pedestrians and motorists.
Asst Supt Maruru said in some cases, the traffic lights would not be functioning and none of the road users would be willing to give way, a situation which results in road accidents.
Further, he stated that the road passes through the village and shops are on both sides of the road hence high movement of people. He appealed to Gaborone –Zeerust road users to always apply caution when using the road to avoid being involved in accidents which could had been avoided.
On other road traffic issues, Asst Supt Maruru said the Tlokweng Road safety committee over the weekend engaged on road safety campaign in the village, targeting those driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol. He said twelve people were arrested for driving motor vehicles while under the influence of alcohol, seven were arrested for driving motor vehicles without drivers licenses while fifteen were arrested for various traffic offences.
Asst Supt Maruru said the road safety campaign was a success. ENDS
