04 Jul 2018

The Minister of Tertiary Education ,Research ,Science And Technology  Mr Ngaka Ngaka  has informed Parliament on July 3  that there are plans to adjust students off campus allowance

Responding to a parliamentary question by MP for Gaborone North Mr Haskins Nkaigwa, the minister said he was unable to state the extent of the adjustment as the matter was still being finalized.

Mr Ngaka told parliament that he would make an announcement before the end of month(July 2018).

He said the allowance was currently not attracting any inflationary adjustments because it was a budgetary matter.

“We have a limited budget against the ever increasing numbers of students needing sponsorship, funds permitting, we could consider ways of linking the frequency of adjustments, as well as the magnitude of the adjustments to inflationary trends,” he said.

MP Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister if there were plans to upgrade tertiary students off-campus allowance to P1900 which was their previous allowance before the economic recession .

He also wanted to know why the allowance was not attracting inflationary adjustments and how the students were expected to live with a stagnant allowance for the past eight years. ENDS
