In terms of Section 9 (1) of the University of Botswana Act, the university council shall consist of 32 members.
According to the Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology Mr Fidelis Molao, who was answering a question in Parliament on June 28, the tenure of 12 members of the council had since ended while that of the other 13 members remained effective.
Mr Molao said that the UB council last sat on March 16 and formed a quorum at the said meeting.
He explained that the appointment of members of the council was a process involving various stakeholders, adding that the process was ongoing and would be finalised soon.
Selebi Phikwe West MP Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse had wanted the minister to state the number of UB Council members provided for in the Act as well as the number of members whose mandate had ended and those who were still in the council.
Mr Keorapetse had also asked the minister to state the last time the council sat and if the meeting formed a quorum.
Further, he called on the minister to explain the delays in appointing UB Council members. ENDS
