SPEDU facilitates jobs creation
27 Jun 2018
Selebi Phikwe Economic Diversification (SPEDU) has facilitated the creation of 754 jobs in the SPEDU region since the closure of the BCL mine and the number is expected to increase as more companies are established and expanded in the region.
Answering a question in Parliament on June 26, Assistant Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Mr Moiseraele Goya said SPEDU mandate was to promote economic diversification in the SPEDU region in sectors of Agriculture, Tourism and manufacturing industries.
He said it also provided business facilitation to attract inward investment to the region in order to create employment, exports and import-substituting products and ensure sustainability of the economy without over-reliance on mining activities, hence its mandate was still relevant.
MP for Selebi Phikwe West, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse had asked the minister to give an update on the number of jobs SPEDU had created in the region since the closure of the BCL mine and if the mandate of SPEDU was still relevant to deal with the revitalisation of the economy following the closure of BCL.
