Volleyball ladies eye gold

20 Jun 2018

The Botswana ladies volleyball team has finished top in the group stages of Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Associations (CUCSA) Games after winning all its four matches.

The local girls got off to a winning start by beating Zambia 3-1 at Molapo SuperFit on Monday before thrashing Zimbabwe 3-0 on Tuesday.

They went on to hand Lesotho a 3-0 drubbing in their third match and thrashed South Africa by the same scoreline in their last group match on Wednesday.

The encounter against Lesotho was slow-paced which proved to be a walk in the park for team Botswana.

After victory over Lesotho, team Botswana coach Shadrack Modiakgotla praised his charges for their exceptional showing over the four games.

“As of now, everything is going well as the team has been exceptional in all the games so far. We have really prepared well and these wins serve as motivation to keep doing well because we have never won in the last two consecutive CUCSA games, so we are eyeing the gold this time,” he said in an interview.

For his part, team Lesotho coach, Emmanuel Khakanyo expressed disappointment over their loss against Botswana, attributing it to a new set of players as the team prepares for the CUCSA 2020 games to be held in Lesotho.

“Most of the members in the team are beginners, so we are trying to build them. We are still struggling to find our feet as a team, but so far it looks promising.

I foresee a lot of improvement in the next game against Zimbabwe, it is just a matter of giving them enough exposure to perform better,” Khakanyo commented.

This year’s CUCSA Games have attracted eight countries which participate in more than 10 sporting codes. The competition is expected to end on Friday. ENDs
