stop factions - Nsunge

18 Jun 2018

Gaborone United (GU) Football Club chairman, Boitumelo Nsunge has appealed to executive committee members and supporters to desist from destabilising the team through factions.

Speaking in an interview during the general meeting held in Palapye over the weekend, Nsunge said factions within Gaborone United have rendered the club impossible to run and have caused it to perform poorly in the last BTC premier league.

He said it would be an uphill battle for the team to solicit sponsors to stabilise it financially if the factions continued.

He added that no sponsor would want to be associated with a divided team, noting that only unity and peace could move the team forward.

He said it was paramount for the team to open branches across the country, arguing that supporters should participate to pull the team out of its financial quagmire.

“If we do not have active branches we will continue to experience low turnout of supporters during our games, and also we need supporters in all activities of the team. We need to have a clear road map that supporters can follow in activities that are spearheaded by the team” he said.

Nsunge urged executive committee members and supporters to redouble their efforts in supporting the team, adding that if not it would relegate.

He admitted that GU was financially unstable with a weak executive committee, saying it has adversely affected its management.

He noted that the team has debts amounting to over P1 million for pending cases of former players, money owed to former coaches, rentals and security companies to mention a few.

Nsunge said the financial crisis has been costly and has led the team to perform poorly in the last season as players boycotted some games due to unpaid salaries.

He said the team should seize the newly introduced Botswana Telecommunication Corporation (BTC) charity cup and urged supporters to vote for the team in numbers for it to compete in the cup.

For his part, general manager, Olebile Sikwane said the team needs P3m to stabilise and start on a clean slate. ENDs
