23 Jul 2013
Drivers and pedestrians have been urged to exercise caution whenever they are driving or crossing the road to avoid accidents.
Mochudi police have raised concern over some accidents that happened due to drivers’ ignorance of road signs and pedestrians who were not cautious when crossing the road. In an interview, Assistant Superintendent Wazha Zambezi said some accidents could have been easily avoided.
He said during the President’s holidays, a 46- year- old woman was hit by a car while crossing the road at Dikgonnye ward and sustained serious injuries which led to her death. Asp Supt Zambezi said the accident could have been avoided if both the driver and pedestrian could have exercised more caution at the cross roads.
The police officer stressed the importance of saving lives on Botswana roads especially that some victims were sole breadwinners. He was worried that at Dikgonnye junction, there was a chibuku depot on the right and farms on the other side.
In another incident, Assistant Superintendent Zambezi said a 29- year-old man was arrested after he allegedly raped a 65-year-old woman of Makgophana ward in Mochudi. He also stated that around one o’clock in the morning, the suspect went into the old woman’s house and asked her to undress and later raped her.
He said investigations were still ongoing while the suspect remained in custody. In yet another incident, two suspects, a 19- year-old man and 20- year- old woman were arrested for attempted robbery after they tried to steal by force from a woman who was resting in her car.
He said the duo strangled the woman and when she called for help, members of the public together with the police came to her rescue. Assistant Superintendent Zambezi applauded the public for helping in the arrest of the two suspects adding that community involvement in the fight against crime is vital. Ends
