Official calls on communities to be proactive in sport

23 May 2018

Sport facilitator from Tshane Police, Otsile Tsimane, has encouraged communities to be proactive in sport as it plays a vital role in their wellbeing.

Giving a keynote address during Botswana Sports Volunteers Movement (SVM) activity in Hukuntsi recently, Tsimane said sport served as a way of enjoyment, wellness, fitness and even an employment opportunity.

He however said organising for sporting activities was very expensive as it required a lot of manpower and different skills.

He said the challenges could be overcome through involvement of SVM, which would assist the sport association and organisers to put together an event with minimum costs.

He further called on communities to volunteer in sport activities in order to improve district image in hosting prestige tournaments with highly qualified volunteers with good courtesy and hospitality.

Furthermore, he said their volunteerism would also bring about social order and cohesion within the playground as well as accelerating economic development and reduce costs of running sports hence increasing sustainability.

He noted that developed countries had hosted big events like World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Olympics and had become successful because of sport volunteers.

He also applauded volunteers for their utmost attention during the 2nd African Youth Games, world netball youth games and Botswana Games.

Meanwhile, he called on the sub-region committee to work hard in publicising the movement and ensuring that they provide volunteers to every event, which they would be requested to do so.

Earlier in his remarks, Obusitswe Bapege encouraged youth to participate in sporting activities as they could tap on it to earn a living.

Bapege said sport would keep them busy, and also help them to stay away from engaging in delinquency acts.

For his part, Kgotlaetsile Moube called for the resuscitation of Hukuntsi Sub-region SVM.

He said the previously elected committee was not functional.

He noted that SVM played an important role in the sport fraternity as they were the game makers.

With regard to committee elections, Moube said in the previous years, the committee membership ran for two years but after the reviews of some strategies, membership was extended to be four-year’s term.

During their election, Kaelo Letsepe was elected to be at the helm of SVM commitee in Hukuntsi after garnering six votes against his contender, Daniel Mokgare, who bagged four votes.

Mokgare was then elected vice chairperson unopposed.

The secretary general position went to Gaeleboe Moswang, and Boitshiko Hiri is the new treasurer, while the public relation Officer position went to Kaelo Diphofu.

Lawrence Mothibi, Katlego Sekgwa and Mokhutshwane were elected as additional members. Ends
