Mariano penetrates female market

23 May 2018

The ever dynamic culture and the integration of societies has changed the notion that certain jobs or professions are for men while others are for women.

One figure who has killed the myth is Mr Diyerenge Mariano, who has joined the womenfolk in hairdressing to escape the claws of poverty.

As a sole operator, the humble 42-year-old is living his dream as a hairdresser in his home village of Samochima, which is about 10 kilometres from Shakawe.

Mr Mariano said he started operating his business in 2008 as a small barber shop by the bus stop, adding that as a way of developing his business, he sought assistance from the social welfare office under the Poverty Eradication programme.

He said in 2013, he went for a three-months course in Francistown, where he was engaged in various ways of hair dressing including weaves, colouring, extensions, perms, curling, and any hair style.

He said afterwards he was given salon equipment including a generator, but he currently uses solar panels, because they reduce his fuel expenses.

Mr Mariano, who works with all hair types and textures, said since he started being his own boss, life has been easy as he can save for future and afford his insurance, fend for his children as well as some basic needs.

He said being a hairdresser is all about serving clients as one comes into contact with different people every day, which keeps the job both challenging and rewarding.

Mr Mariano cited water shortage as one of the major challenge as well as people who never pay and some who take long to pay.

He said hair products are also expensive.

He said just like in any other business, the market is seasonal, adding that since he has been in the industry for a while, he is aware of its ups and downs.

He said his passion contributes greatly as he can endure the setbacks and keep his nose to the grind.

Mr Mariano therefore urged other people who want to engage in business to invest in something that they are passionate about to make a living as it will allow them to be patient and creative. ENDS
