Sankoyo likely to survive relegation

14 May 2018

Sankoyo Bush Bucks’ win against already demoted Gilport Lions has boosted their morale as they still have another day to fight to remain in the elite league with one game remaining.

The Maun -based outfit, thrashed the Lobatse side, Gilport Lions with six goals to one on Saturday at the Maun Sports Complex.

The home side entered the field knowing that anything less than a victory would condemn them to the second tier.

However, things are now taking shape at Ngurungu as Sankoyo is affectionately known by its loyal supporters, as their win against Gilport Lions has brought back joy to supporters and confidence to players.

The visiting team dominated the first half and scored their first goal through Bonolo Takula on the 35th minute. The boys continued putting more pressure on their opponents as they wanted the second goal to be on the safe side.

The goal by the visitors almost made things worse for the home boys as they seemed to be in a panic mode until the end of the first half.

In the second half, the home side made a dramatic comeback as the Zimbabwean play maker, Morris Ruzivo hit the net on the 46th minute to equalize.

His goal bought back confidence on his team which took control of the game. More goals started to come as Ruvizo scored a brace, followed by Onobasha Mbaiwa with three goals while Gosaitse Manuel scored the sixth goal.

In the second half Gilport Lions never made an attempt at goal or even shot on target.

However, Sankoyo are not yet safe as they need to win their last game against Police X1 to remain in the premier league.

The team’s mentor, Philani Mabhena revealed in an interview that he is confident that they will survive the relegation if they win their last game. Mabhena said his side was very lucky to have all the strikers noting that in the previous games, they experienced a lot of injuries.

Mabhena dedicated their win to Sankoyo fans who always rallied behind the team even during difficult times.

He is optimistic that his boys will not disappoint supporters in the last away game which is scheduled for May 26.

Meanwhile, Sankoyo is sitting on position 12 with 32 points. They are above Security Systems, TAFIC and already relegated Union Flamingo Santos and Gilport Lions.

Sankoyo will pin their hopes on Orapa United to beat Security Systems which are also under pressure to survive relegation.

Efforts to talk to Gilport Lions head coach hit a snag as he refused to talk to the media. ENDS
