Lack of parental guidance cause for concern

29 Apr 2018

Lack of parental guidance is said to be one major contributory factor to the high rate of incidents of unbecoming behaviour amongst the youth.

The observation was made by Tati Siding Customary Court president, Kgosi Simon Nkgageng in an interview with BOPA.

Kgosi Nkgageng decried lack of morality in his village, explaining that no day passed without reports of misunderstandings, fighting, drug and alcohol abuse and careless driving, which gave the police sleepless nights.

Such acts, he explained, were particularly rife amongst the youth of ages ranging from 19 to 30.

“Some youth in my village have developed a tendency of forming groups where they challenge others to the extent that fights emerge. The situation seems to worsen during weekends and month end,” Kgosi Nkgageng noted.

He observed that such indiscipline was being encouraged by some parents who tend to turn a blind eye to unruly behaviour and abdicate their responsibilities of nurturing and instilling good morals in their children from a tender age.

Kgosi Nkgageng stressed that it was the responsibility and right for every parent to execute their parental duties to their children while still young so that they grew up knowing the difference between what was wrong and what was right in the eyes of the society.

Furthermore, he appealed to parents to remember the Setswana saying “Lore le ojwa le sa le metsi” pointing out that unbecoming behaviour had no good result except the destruction of their future, wealth and health.

He cautioned the youth to refrain from such practices and channel their energies to things that could benefit them and the country as a whole.

Kgosi Nkgageng mentioned that they should strive to find ways through which they could create job opportunities by going into businesses through government economic initiatives that were availed to them. ENDS
