Teenage pregnancy cause for concern

19 Apr 2018

Tsabong Unified Secondary School head, Mr Kooagile Gabonthone  has expressed worry over the high number of teenage pregnancies in the school.

Mr Gabonthone said this at a bootcamp hosted for form five students recently.

In 2016, he said they recorded six cases of pregnancies, while in 2017 12 pregnancies were reported.

Already, he said 19 students had dropped out of school.

In 2018, he said so far there were four cases reported.

The headmaster attributed the problem  to poor parenting especially during school holidays saying students tend to have more freedom during the period.

He said most students roam the streets during the holidays, something which he attributed to parents’ poor supervision.      “This kind of behavior impacted negatively on results and breeds bad manners,” Mr Gabonthone said.

He further said the students misbehaved more when they were out of school premises, while they vandalised school property during school days.

He encouraged the students to desist from such behaviour because they were still young, warning that bad behaviour could expose them to diseases and unwanted pregnancies, which could destroy their lives in the process.

Mr Gabonthone  said  the school had already spent P20 000 in installations of cameras to monitor the students. ENDS
