Arts council still priority
15 Apr 2018
Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Mr Thapelo Olopeng has said a decision will be made and communicated on the position paper from the creative industry.
Responding to a question in Parliament recently, Minister Olopeng said the position paper was received and subsequently considered by the ministry.
Mr Olopeng stated that the ministry had an intention to establish an arts council but this had not been realised due to budgetary constraints.
He also explained that in the past arts associations were given grants to run their secretariats but this has since been stopped due to budgetary constraints.
Gaborone North MP Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked about what happened to the position paper that was handed to the minister by the creative industry and if there were plans to establish an arts council, if so, when and if not then why.
He had further wanted to know what happened to the grants that were given to associations in the past years. ENDS
