Lower division path widens for Lions

15 Apr 2018

The BTC Premiership has entered an exciting stage with teams in the relegation zone fighting with everything at their disposal to survive the axe.

In a game featuring two teams facing the chop over the weekend, Security Systems put a nail in Gilport Lions' coffin, condemning them to the lower division through goals from Osego Gaotewe and Godiraone Modingwane scored in each half to make it two nil.

Through the victory, Systems have now revived their chances of surviving for another season while there is no hope for the bottom placed Lions.

Systems coach, Daniel Nare was on the bench for the first time since his arrival two weeks ago, and the players gave him a warm welcome by doing exactly what he showed them to ensure victory.

The game itself started slowly, as none of the teams could play three or more passes without losing the ball.

However, as the game progressed, Security Systems started taking control of the midfield and this put pressure on Gilport Lions, ensuring a busy afternoon for Tumelo Sekanonyana and Elvis Meleke.

Lynoth Chikuhwa could have put Systems ahead but he was unfortunate as his header ballooned over the bar.

Minutes later, Malvin Chipunza could have scored after receiving a good pass from Chikuhwa but his shot went wide, much to the disappointment of Systems’ supporters who were already celebrating.

It seems Gilport Lions had problems with corner kicks but unfortunately, they were put to waste as Chipunza was unmarked but his header missed the net by a whisker.

Few minutes from half time, Gaotewe put his team ahead with a calculated free kick just on the edge of the box to ensure a lead at recess.

The second half saw both teams continuing where they left off, with Systems piling pressure on their opponents while Lions looked like lost sheep in the desert.

Lions knew what to do in defence but their attacking was in shambles as most of the time the strikers seemed not to know what to do with the ball.

At times they turned to pass while they had an opportunity to take a shot.

Chikuhwa, who had a busy yet unfruitful day as he failed to score, wasted another opportunity as he was able to turn on the defenders but his poorly executed shot landed on the goalkeeper’s hands.

Nare introduced Thapelo Senoya, saving Chikuhwa from further embarrassment.

As the game progressed, Systems exchanged few passes and Modingwane’s thunderous shot proved to be too much for goalkeeper Tshomarelo More who just saw the celebrations that another ball had passed through him.

Systems now have accumulated 27 points from 25 games while Gilport Lions are sitting at the bottom with only 8 points from the same number of games. ENDS
