Kokorwe walks for former school

09 Apr 2018

Speaker of the National Assembly Ms Gladys Kokorwe has said the aim of a sponsored walk is not only to raise funds but also to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Speaking at the conclusion of a 10-kilometre sponsored walk in Thamaga on April 7, Ms Kokorwe encouraged the participants to live healthy lifestyles by taking part in exercises.

She said the world today was faced with different non-communal diseases such as diabetes, hyper tension and obesity, hence the need for people to constantly exercise.

The aim of the sponsored walk was to raise funds for an administration block for Gobuamang Primary School situated in the village.

She said being the former pupil at the school, she felt compelled to also assist in raising funds, hence she contributed P1 000.

The Speaker further asked several companies for donations and Trans World offered drinking water bottles valued at P2 000 to be used by the participants.

Choppies pledged P2 000 while Motor Centre and World Group of Companies also donated P2 000.

Member of Parliament for Thamaga-Kumakwane Mr Tshenolo Mabeo has pledged 50 bags of cement.

Mr Mabeo said the school itself was built by the local community hence they were continuing the legacy laid down during the colonial era.

He said at the time, Britain, as the colonial masters, had other priority areas, hence the decision by the residents of Thamaga to build one for themselves.

The MP also did his primary education at Gobuamang and urged the parents and the local business community to assist in any way they could.

Meanwhile, he promised to work tirelessly to improve the working conditions of teachers saying low morale was behind the poor results.

He said following his appointment as the Minister of Employment, Labour and Productivity, he would work closely with the Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration and ministers responsible for education to amend the Public Services Act as ‘it does not accommodate teachers and nurses.’

Gobuamang school head Mr Mogorosi Kenosi said the idea of constructing an administration block started last year, and they decided to raise funds through various means before approaching government for assistance.

The school currently uses the storeroom as an administration block which he said was not conducive.

He said several companies such as Nata Timber pledged their support while the locals had voluntarily offered to undertake the construction work.

Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has assisted with architectural drawings and quantity surveying. ENDS
