Plans afoot to power primary schools countrywide

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso says a total of 682 primary schools are connected to the power grid.
Answering a question in Parliament on Wednesday, Ms Tshireletso said 21 primary schools are serviced by solar power and 53 schools are not connected to any form of power.
He said 40 of those had been identified to be connected with solar power while the remaining 13 schools are in villages connected to Botswana Power Corporation power grid.
She said her ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic Education, was in the process of sourcing funds to construct centralised solar power plants and connect 20 schools in the 2018/2019 financial year.
She however said funds permitting; the rest of the 20 schools would be connected in the subsequent financial years, adding the 13 schools in villages connected to the BPC grid would also be connected in the financial year 2018/2019.
Mahalapye West Member of Parliament, Mr Joseph Molefe had asked the minister to state how many primary schools were connected to the power grid, how many primary schools were serviced by solar power, how many schools were not connected to any form of power; and when the ministry was planning to have connected all schools to some form of power.
