08 Apr 2018

Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) adopted and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Palapye Junior Secondary School (PSS).

Speaking during the signing of the MoU at PSS on Friday, MCM general manager, Mr David Kgoboko said MCM had the desire to see the school ranking among the top 10 schools in Junior Secondary Exams, hence their partnership with the school.

He said the partnership was meant to close the gaps and create an enabling environment for both teachers and students for their goal to be achieved

Mr Kgoboko said MCM had come up with policies to improve the welfare of Batswana, citing the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility, where the mine gives back to the community.

He said this initiative had the pillar of education through which the mine saw it fit to partner with PSS to improve the academic results

The school head,  Mr Thatayaone Kefilwe said entering into a three- year partnership with MCM  was a welcome development because  partnerships were good for the school to realise its goal of improved performance

He expressed his gratitude for the partnership, saying that it would go a long way in improving performance among teachers and students.

Mr Kefilwe said PSS scored 47.5 per cent in the 2017 JC results, which was a 10 per cent improvement from 37 per cent scored the previous year.

“We are proud of this improved performance and we are convinced that the future is great.”

He assured MCM that he would ensure that students and teachers work harder to achieve the set goal.

Palapye sub-region principal education officer, Mr Shandulo Maphorisa added that the day marked an important opportunity for the school and the ministry of Basic Education to appreciate the gesture awarded by MCM

He said Basic education had set itself three critical commitments coined on three pillars, namely restoration of public confidence, credibility and collaboration

Mr Maphorisa said the public had lost confidence in the education sector  due to declining academic results and stated that  there was need to restore the public confidence by ensuring credibility through adherence to the set educational standards

He also added that collaboration with stakeholders was critical in delivering on the set standards.

Parents Teachers Association chairperson, Mr Molefhe Modise also thanked MCM for the partnership, saying that it would help the school attain quality resultHe urged the students to be ambassadors of MCM by working harder, adding, ‘let us do so much with the little that we have’.

He also emphasised on discipline, saying that students needed to adopt positive behaviours that would lead to result improvement.  ENDS
