Parliament has been told that the Botswana Defence Force Welfare Fund is a non-appropriated fund established out of contributions from members of the BDF.

Answering a question, Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Dikgakgamatso Seretse said the purpose of the fund was to provide a savings and loans security for BDF members. Mr Seretse also noted that the fund was doing well and it was audited periodically by Deloite and Touche who were appointed in August 2008.

However, Seretse said issuing of welfare loans was currently suspended pending an internal audit and police investigations into the operations of the scheme for Financial Statements for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Francistown South MP, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi had asked the minister to state the purpose of the Welfare Fund and how it was fairing. ENDS
