26 Mar 2018
Motswedi Junior Secondary School in Gaborone has won the Francophone essay competition beating Marang and Tlogatloga junior secondary schools.
Speaking at the prize giving ceremony held at the French Embassy recently, the France Ambassador to Botswana, Mr Pierre Voillery said there were more than 40 schools in Botswana that offered French as a subject with at least 100 teachers in both public and private sector.
The ambassador said French language was present in Africa in the sense that 30 out of 54 African countries were members of the Organization International de la francophone and 21 countries had French as an official language
He said even in the SADC region, four out of 15 member states had French as an official language or largely speak French and stated that Botswana had long shown interest in teaching French to its youth, and most particularly by introducing French as a second language in the secondary education.
Mr Voillery thanked the France Botswana Business Club for sponsoring the competition and pleaded with them to consider the same gesture next year as they intended to have the competition on an annual basis.
Motswedi JSS went home P1 500 richer while Marang took home P1 000 with Tlogatloga pocketing P500. Ends
