Southern District full council has been informed that the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) has realised its intended purpose of addressing backlog of projects.
Council chairperson, Mr Alec Seametso said during the speech to mark official opening of a week- long full council session on Monday that the programme has helped create employment to locals.
He said this was notwithstanding the fact that the district still had outstanding projects dating back to 2016/17 financial year due to failure to deliver by initial contractors.
Councillor Seametso however said the council had managed to engage new contractors and that projects were now nearing completion.
“These include completion of Sekhutlane customary court which is at 92 per cent and construction of classroom block at Khonkwa, classroom block at Betesankwe and Sekoma Primary Schools respectively which are at 95 per cent,” he said.
On other issues, Councillor Seametso informed the full council about successful electrification of primary schools at Seherelela, Tsonyane, Thankane, Mahotshwane and Kanaku.
He further mentioned that installation of street light at Pitsane, Khakhea and Kanye as well as floodlights at Ranaka, Lekgolobotlo, Magotlhwane, Kgomokasitwa, Kutuku and Lefhoko primary schools had also been completed.
On water, Councillor Seametso acknowledged adverse water shortage; a situation he concurred had greatly affected developments within Kanye and Moshupa cluster.
“There are areas where the resource is completely unavailable more especially at new lay outs. As a result, distribution network expansion cannot be undertaken under these prevailing circumstances,” he said.
He also said that within the serviced areas, extensive periods of low pressure to no supply were more common than before.
Additionally, Councillor Seametso said the situation was also prevalent for cluster villages like Lotlhakane East, Gasegwagwa, Lorolwane, Moshana, Lotlhakane West, Ralekgetho and Tshwaane.
He gave an assurance that authorities were running round the clock to remedy the situation. ENDS
