Registration for the Mascom derby horse race has been closed.

The chief organiser of the event, Charlie Mabua said in an interview that registration started in January this year and expressed happiness about the number of horses that had already registered both locally and internationally.

Mabua noted that it was impressing to see more locals coming forth as they wanted to see them dominating the race.

“This is an indication that the event grows bigger every year as many people appreciate its importance in the lives of the communities,” he added.

This year, Mabua anticipates a tough competition and urged the locals to train hard especially those racing thorough breed adding that they should feed their horses and make them ready for the competition.

He said international horses would take part in all the races expect Tswana breed race which is reserved for the locals.

The race is scheduled for March 31 at Shashe horse track. Mabua hoped that the event would attract thousands of visitors to Maun as it would be month end.

The event brings new and exciting avenues of entertainment to the tourism destination and surrounding areas.

He mentioned some new developments such as erecting a fence to separate enthusiasts from from the horse track.

He said last year they experienced challenges of movement but noted that they had addressed the problem by increasing gates for easy movement of both people and vehicles.
