Ministry of Basic Education has taken the decision to temporarily close Zoroga Primary School in the Nata/Gweta constituency as a result of floods.
Speaking in an interview on behalf of the ministry, chief education officer for Tutume sub region, Ms Khumoyame Mosetlha explained that the ministry had taken the decision to temporarily close the school for two weeks pending assessment of the flood situation.
Ms Mosetlha noted that the current status of flooding at the pupils ablution block had turned out to be a health hazard, and that five of the eight teachers’ quarters were submerged in water.
She added that they have since made arrangements to have the affected teachers moved into classrooms while solutions to the crisis were being explored.
She said parents have been advised to ensure that learning at home does not stop during the period
Ms Mosetlha reiterated that all stakeholders would be working round the clock to come up with strategies of assisting teachers and students for lost time so that they could catch up on the curriculum.
She emphasised that together with the ministry leadership they would ensure that assessment was done on time and put measures in place on the way forward.
Meanwhile Tutume Sub-district council chairperson, Mr Ishmael Mokgethi said they were going to assist teachers with moving their properties to safer places in the school, and to monitor the situation of toilets more so that they could not drain the sceptic tanks because of underground water which has led to overflowing of the toilets.
He said council would provide counselling through their social workers to affected parents and children, and urged parents not to take their children to cattle posts and fields with the pretext that the schools were closed. Ends
