Kgosi Ketsitlile laid to rest in emotive ceremony

Kgosi Goboletswe Ketsitlile was laid to rest in Kanye on March 9 in an emotive and celebratory atmosphere as mourners cried and celebrated his life.
Among the thousands of mourners was the MP for Kanye North, Mr Patrick Ralotsia, who described the late kgosi as one of the village elders who inspired him. He described him as an outspoken leader who played an active role in ensuring that there was peace and unity in the village.
Kgosi Ketsitlile died on February 26 after giving a speech and collapsing during his nephews’ funeral at Segwagwa. His nephew was killed by people. Kgosi Ketsitlile was 93-years-old.
Most people suspected that he was depressed about the death of his nephew. He died at SDA hospital in Kanye.
Mr Ralotsia said the late kgosi was a dedicated person and a true servant of God who served his people whole-heartedly.
Mr Ralotsia said the late kgosi deserved to be showered with praises because he had a colourful track record.
Mr Ralotsia, who is also Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security, said Kgosi Ketsitlile was exemplary and an asset to the family as well as the country.
Mr Ralotsia described the late kgosi as “a big tree that provided shade for the community.” He also described the late kgosi as a humble, loving and caring person.
Kgosi Ketsitlile, who was also a senior chief representative, was known for his diligence and hard work.
The mourners gathered at Mokuete ward to pay their last respects to the late kgosi, whose death was described as a loss not only to his family, but also to the tribal administration.
The paramount chief of Bangwaketse, Kgosi Malope said he remembered the late Kgosi Ketsitlile as a straight talker who loathed mischief. He said he worked under him and was his advisor.
Kgosi Malope also noted that Kgosi Ketsitlile was committed to his duties, adding that he significantly reduced the number of appeal cases coming from Kanye.
His friend, Kgosi Kitso Kelosiwang said he was a passionate farmer, honest person, and an advisor on all walks of life. He also added that he was knowledgeable about the Bangwaketse history. Kgosi Kelosiwang also said he was well-known by the name “Rakaba,” adding that he used to call him “knowledge.”
He said he retired from the chieftainship in 2016 and that he was respectful to everybody in Kanye. He also noted that he worked hand in hand with him in solving issues.
Former council chairperson, Mr Leach Tlhomelang said Kgosi Ketsitlile educated his children and grandchildren. He said he was number one in elaborating the Bangwaketse history. “A itse go betla mafoko a Setswana.”
Kgosi Ketsitlile was the first born of six siblings to the late Mr Ditogo Ketsitlile and Ms Margaret Goitlodiwang. He was born in Kanye where he spent most of his childhood.
Rakaba, as he was fondly known by those close to him, was gracious and humorous as was described by his children. They also described him as a strict man.
Kgosi Ketsitlile attended his primary school in Kanye, Moshupa and Kike under the care of his uncles (Boora Chelenyane), who were teachers at a number of schools. He proceeded to secondary school and tertiary education at Tigerkloof in Vryburg, South Africa.
During his time at Tigerkloof he excelled in both academics and sports. He was a renowned football player and known as “Across the Desert.’’ He played for Kanye Swallows football club. After graduating from Tigerkloof, he returned home and started working as a teacher. It was said that he was diligent with his work and quickly progressed to head teacher at Kanye High School, Gabane Primary School, Lesedi Primary School in Gaborone, Mmathethe Primary School and Seepapitso Secondary School.
Due to his experience and outstanding performance, Kgosi Bathoen II withdrew him from the teaching service to serve at the Bangwaketse Tribal Administration as a secretary.
He also served as a specially elected councillor in the Southern District Council, and was an advisor in several boards.
He was joined in holy matrimony at the London Missionary Society (LMS), currently UCCSA Church in 1957 in Kanye. They were blessed with two sons and five daughters.
Kgosi Ketsitlile is survived by his wife, two sons and five daughters. ENDS
